Science Fiction Is a Window——Abstract of Liu Cixin’s Interview in Germany

Liu Cixin is well-known for his widely acclaimed science fiction but he is a lowkey and little seen writer. On October 13 last year, Liu, who made his debut on an overseas book exhibition, together with the German version of The Three-Body Problem II: The Dark Forest , met with readers. Liu and German actor Mark Bremer read some paragraphs in the novel in Chinese and German respectively, evoking wild enthusiasm among German fans on social media.

A German book fan Jonathan said, “My friend recommended The Three-Body Problem to me and it is very different from those I have read before.

I love it very much. Besides the sci-fi plots, I can also gain an in-depth understanding of the Chinese mode of thinking and Chinese history, including Chinese people’s perceptions about western culture. This is very interesting. This novel goes far beyond a pure science fiction.”

Ackermann (German scholar of Chinese studies, renowned translator) said, “Most Chinese writers are unknown in Germany or even in the West. But Liu Cixin is a household name. He is a very important science novelist recognized not only in English-speaking countries but also in Germany. His science fiction strikes a chord among people from different cultural backgrounds.” When asked whether he had expected The Three-Body Problem to be a hit in the West, Liu admitted that when The Three-Body Problem was translated English, he just wanted the English readers to know that there also were sci-fi novels coming from China. In his previous overseas exchanges, Liu used to be asked whether China had its own science fiction. But now, Liu said that today’s market response is “surely beyond expectation”.

Through media, many readers have known “A Tour of Liu Cixin’s Science Fiction in Germany” coorganized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Heyne affiliated to Random House. But they still hope to know more about Liu’s interview with Michael Kahn-Ackermann and Dart, Correspondent ofFrankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

To this end, we list the abstract of this interview as below: “Science itself differs both in the West and China. In the West, people have gone through the stage of scientific development and stand at a stage where many subsectors bloom. In China, however, the country’s industrialization stands at its very beginning. Under such a case, Chinese people may have more floors talking about science. Because in China, the risks caused by the negative effect resulted from scientific development may be greater than that in the West, and science, not only in the public but also in the government, has been placed unprecedented importance, which is tremendous enough to make the whole society neglect its negative effect. Considering the status quo of China’s development, however, scientific development is the only choice. This situation is also more or less reflected in my science fiction as the science described in current Western novels takes on many negative images.

Furthermore, the future formed by those images is quite gloomy.

In my science fiction, science, in the future, boasts dangerous, gloomy and bright aspects, which may draw a difference between my science fiction and the Western counterparts.”

“Science fiction, unlike previous understanding, is arranging the future and its every possibility instead of predicting it. The Dark Forest exactly lists the worst possibilities.”

“I think the only choice to reasonably deal with scientific development is to bravely face and then overcome its negative effect. Avoidance is not a wise choice.”

“As my short stories have grand frameworks and scenes, each one of them is tantamount to the outline of a full-length novel. However, these short stories fail to develop full-length novels, which is surely my regret. I have more than once thought if all my 30 plus short stories become full-length novels, what on earth it would be.”

“I think that we should be rational about the future, which means that we believe human beings may have a bright future but we should also be vigilant about our own choices. A wrong choice made, the future may crash the dark side described in the science fiction. In one word, future depends on the present.”

“What politicians, economists or people from other fields can see is not because they are short-sighted but they have more restrictions. In general, they have to focus themselves on a time range of less than half a century, or it will be very difficult for them to realize themselves. But science fiction is not restricted by reality, which is an advantage for it to serve as a literary theme.”

“Science fiction is a window through which we can see the time and space beyond life. Scientists always take a long view, a view even longer than what science fiction could take. In fact, the furthest distance that science fiction can see will not go beyond the scope of science. Take the cosmic doomsday as an example: we cannot see what will come after the cosmic doomsday, but scientists can.”

“Science fiction itself is a literary theme that transcends time and space, entering the remote universe. Therefore, whenever I write science fiction, I expand the scope of time and space as much as possible within the framework of story.”

“Science fiction from different countries shares much more in common, which far outweighs the differences.”
